Leading radiology research

Setting a foundation for innovation and patient care

Ever since the first X-ray was captured in 1895, radiology has grown in its role in health care. For over 75 years, the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at Indiana University School of Medicine has worked closely with patients throughout Indiana and around the world to empathize with their concerns, address their diagnosis and provide the best preventative treatments moving forward. But before experts can provide life-saving diagnosis, innovations in research are vital to bring forth improved standards of care and the world's leading imaging technological capabilities.

Whether it be breakthroughs in interventional radiology or new discoveries in PSMA PET imaging—radiology is a cornerstone of diagnosis for modern medicine. Over the years, department experts, like Gary Hutchins, PhD and Rupa Radhakrishnan, MD, have led new research advancements that have helped shape the field. Additionally, the department has excelled in research funding in recent years, bringing over $9 million in 2021, setting a strong foundation for the department to continue to thrive in research opportunities for years to come.

The future in research innovation

The IU School of Medicine recognizes the significance that research plays in the world of health care, it recently broke ground on a new 326,000 square foot building for department's, like Radiology and Imaging Sciences, to thrive in its research efforts. The building will give plenty of room for exploratory research in areas like Alzheimer's disease, cancer, diabetes and more. While federal research support has grown years–physical space has not. The future 8-story research tower will provide faculty with room for collaboration and innovation.

Advocating for those left behind in research

When it comes to academic research, credit for the effort nearly always goes to an MD, PhD or RN. However, rarely do stories or news releases bring to light the empowering work and contributions that staff and members of the community make within the world of research.
